Lionel Messi decided to retire from international duty

After failure of Argentina at Copa America final in penalty shootout with Chile, Lionel Messi decided to retire from international duty.

The statement was made in an interview with TyC Sports of Argentina after the match.

“For me the national team is over. I’ve done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion,” Messi said.

This match was the third consecutive time Argentina can join the final match of a big tournament for three years, but all failed. They lost to Germany in extra time of the 2014 World Cup, lost to Chile in the penalty shootout both times in 2015 and 2016.

Lionel Messi is one of the reason led Argentina miss the chance to win the championship when he miss the first penalty shot in the shootout with Chile. After the match finished, Chile won 4-2 on penalty shootout for their second consecutive Copa title.
